Papers, 1846-1886.

The collection is primarily made up of versions of Sumner's speeches which he prepared specifically for publication. The first section contains original manuscripts and pages containing corrections and revisions of speeches published in his "Orations and Speeches" (1850), revised for publication in the first two volumes of his "Works" (1870), probably done from 1868-70. The second section contains Sumner's manuscripts and revisions of printed versions to be included in the later volumes of "Works." The third section contains manuscripts and galley pages which were published independently, including "Lafayette; the Faithful One" (Boston: 1870) and "The National Security and The National Faith; How to Protect the National Freedman and the National Creditor" (Boston: 1865). One box of materials contains his notes, manuscripts, galleys, etc. for his "Speech on the Cession of Russian America to the United States" (1867), also including notes by his secretary Charles Beaman of April 1867, known as the "Beaman Memorandum," documenting a meeting on the treaty. (cont'd) The papers also include a small amount of correspondence, a trial notebook of U.S. vs. Smith, two account books related to the administration of the estate of John Tappan, one volume of unidentified check stubs, and floor plans showing the arrangement of materials on Sumner's walls at the time of his death, perhaps for estate purposes.

5 boxes and 1 oversize container.
